Many people are unsure how much protein they should eat on a daily basis. Just like you, I was perplexed before I began to take my health seriously. I was unsure how much protein I should consume on a daily basis. I also wasn’t sure if I was getting too much or too little protein on a daily basis. If you are in the same boat, I am here to help you.
IS THERE SUCH A THING AS TOO MUCH PROTEIN?
It should go without saying that eating too much protein is bad for you. In fact, eating too much of anything is bad for you. Consider this: remember when you were a kid and you ate too much candy? Didn’t it make your stomach hurt? That is exactly my point. As a result, you should keep track of how much protein you consume and what type of protein you consume on a daily basis.
I’m sure there will be plenty of those who argue that if the protein is excellent for your body, so why limit it? This is due to the fact that you do not want to overdo it. Consuming too much protein will lead to excess calories that will contribute to undesired weight gain. It will also put an excessive amount of strain on your kidneys. Dehydration will be another side effect.
The next logical issue is how much protein should I eat daily. There are numerous aspects to consider before determining how much protein you should eat on a daily basis. I, too, struggled to determine how much protein I required until I conducted an extensive study. I’m here to provide you with an answer to that query.
HOW MUCH PROTEIN SHOULD I CONSUME?
You can determine how much protein you should eat daily in one of two ways. Checking your weight is the first method, and it is also the simplest. Checking your body mass index is the second way, which is a little more difficult. If you do not intend to have a specialist check for you, I recommend that you use the first technique. Although the second way is more precise, it will necessitate the assistance of a professional.
You can calculate how much protein you require by calculating your weight. To find out how much protein someone your size should consume on a daily basis, simply check your weight and Google the question “how much protein should a person my size consume?”. For instance, I am 78 kilograms (172 pounds) in weight. As a result, I require roughly 120-130 grams of protein every day to maintain my weight. You can also use apps from the Google play store or the app store to help you with this.
The second way is to calculate how much protein you should eat daily by using your BMI. When it comes to determining your BMI, there is a good probability that you will not get an accurate reading. I recommend consulting a dietitian in order to obtain an exact measurement. They will calculate your accurate BMI and tell you how much protein you should consume based on that. If I were you, this is the strategy I would use. I say this because they will give you an exact amount, not an estimate, of how much protein you should ingest.
THE SIDE EFFECTS OF PROTEIN
Just like any other food in the world, proteins have side effects. This does not mean that you should stay away from it or that it is not healthy. It simply means that you should watch how you consume it as it can have a negative effect on your overall health. One type of protein that I would advise you to consume little of is red meat. It is one of the less healthy proteins.
In an ideal world, people would be able to take 2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight every day for the rest of their lives without experiencing any negative side effects. However, consider this: Attaining such a goal will be incredibly challenging. That means I would need to eat 156 grams of protein every day. It’s nearly impossible to accomplish that. However, if you achieve this and consume more proteins than you should, you will suffer from severe side effects.
Some side effects you could suffer from include:
- Dehydration.
- Nausea.
- Migraine.
- Indigestion.
- Digestion problems.
- Fatigue.
- Irritability.
- Runny stomach.

Thank you so much for your feedback, I appreciate it.
Thanks for these tips. I have always heard that we should be consuming protein. I also read where most women don’t get enough daily supply of protein. For years I thought of protein as meat but for the last 2 years I have taken to supplementing with shakes. I usually have one scoop of the powder with either breakfast drink or for supper. Thanks for quantifying what exactly is enough or too much protein.
I can see that you are eating enough protein. Thanks for your feedback.
Premier Shake has a lot of sugar, I used to drink this shake trying to get my protein intake daily. It caused my sugar level to raise high. Now I used white eggs for protein.
Egg white protein is good too. Others can try it out.
Thank you for the time to research this topic. About the only thing I’m in danger of consuming too much is coffee and sweets. I have used protein shakes for weight loss in the past and plan on using them again soon. I appreciate you letting me you exactly how much is too much to take.
Try to avoid coffee and sweets. It can be quite harmful to your health. Limit your coffee and sweets intake to twice a week.
Anything that you consume in excess can be bad for you, and that goes for protein as well. Generally speaking when it comes to food and nutrients, it is better to consume the whole food, as many nutrients work together in the body to be absorbed. Taking a protein shake to replace protein after a workout might be good, but one needs to be careful not to overdo it as well.
I totally agree with you. Thank you for your feedback, I truly appreciate it.
I had the habit to eat a lot of things, because it so tasty. But I learnt my lesson after gaining too much weight. Thanks for the tips how to know how much protein to eat. I am going to see a professional to ensure I do the right eating plan. Do not want to calculate incorrect. Then I have extra work to do on my body.

Thank you for a very informative post. Knowing how much protein to eat on daily basis, isn’t easy to workout. Thankfully your post offers sensible guidance on how to work it out. I have always known that too much red meat can be bad for you but in the same breath, I thought your protein intake depended upon how active you are? I believe the recommended protein intake is 2.2lbs per kilo? Now, that’s straight off the top of my head! But I do know that protein is a very useful tool for muscle building recovery, which would differ from the intake of the average guy or girl. Never the less, a great post. Keep them coming.
No, your protein intake depends solely on your weight. It’s two grams per kilo but that is quite tough to get so I usually go for about 120 grams of protein per day. Thank you for your feedback.
I have read many articles that try to analyze how much protein a person can take but in the end I believe the best way to do it is to consult an expert who can measure your body with much better accuracy than most of us inexperienced could ever do. I think this is the best course of action that can determine a better diet overall.
I agree. I dietitian can assist you with that.
Growing up as a kid I always had that mindset of “hey, you have to eat protein always to grow big”. The day I was told eating too much protein was bad, I lost my cool and was so shocked my mouth was wild open.
Most people don’t know this and still have that mindset I had as a kid, but I am glad articles like this are out there to educate people.
Too much of anything is not good for you, so too much of protein will really harm you. Try to find that balance.
I have young sons (between 18 and 25 year old) and nephews (under 18 years) who like using protein supplements. I have read that it might not be safe for young adults to use protein based supplements, is that true? Are there some folks that shouldn’t use it or some folks it has amazing benefits for and is recommended to use it?
It is not safe for people under the age of 18. Protein shakes can be used by anyone and everyone over the age of 18. It will benefit them greatly!
Hey there Daniel,
Great post, I love reading your stuff. This will really help newcomers, especially the guys that think more is always better. People always tend to look for shortcuts when it comes to getting healthy and getting into shape. And they think eating more protein and exercising less will get them the results they want. Drinking more protein shakes is a lot easier than working out and eating healthy regular meals. This post will actually help them workout how much of protein they actually need for the day.
Regards
Lawrence
